Hawaii Travel Advice

Sometimes in all the excitement of visiting Hawaii, its easy to forget the details about how to prepare for a fantastic and safe trip. Here are some recommendations from our teams.

Before you Arrive

Before you leave for your vacation in paradise we recommend…

  • Consider traveling in “shoulder” seasons of October and November or non-spring break weeks in the spring. Summers in Hawaii are very popular times and crowds are at their height.October in particular is a great time to visit, the water is still “summer” warm, the crowds are gone and many hotels, timeshares and airlines have discounted rates during this time.
  • If you plan on renting a car, even if you only want a car for a day or so, we recommend you make reservations in advance.  Unlike other places, if rental companies run out of cars, they can’t just drive one in.
  • Reconfirm your hotel or timeshare and any ground transportation from the airport to your final destination.
  • Remember to bring sunscreen: Hawaii’s sun is warm and bright and intense, even people who rarely burn will want to bring sunscreen to prevent a painful vacation.
  • Make reservations for tours and activities in advance. Many of the most popular attractions, luaus for example, fill up quickly and many are closed one-day during the week.
  • Bring “water shoes”: shoes that are appropriate for water include those with “no-slip” bottoms and cover your toes.
  • Remember that many Hawaii locations accept only cash: while most places in Waikiki accept credit cards, once outside of Waikiki many locations or activities for accept only cash.  Also, there are very few mainland banks in Hawaii, ATMs abound, but be prepared to pay bank fees.
  • A small, water resistant bag to take to the beach will allow you to have something for your wallet, sunscreen and water. You may also wish to bring ziplock bags to protect your cameras from the sand.
  • Bring a hat: You’ll appreciate the ability to keep the sun out of your eyes on occasion.
